Folk WAYS
It’s Fall! Here in Georgia the temperatures have moderated a little. And a few of the trees are showing some color. Football is in full force, and there are fairs and festivals every weekend. What a wonderful time of year. I am reminded of bobbing for apples, burning leaves, and campfires.
On October 12, our northern Canadian neighbors will be celebrating Thanksgiving.
Oktoberfest celebrations originated in Germany, but they have spread to many places in the US, including a cozy little town in North Georgia, Helen. You can celebrate Oktoberfest in true style right at home if you have beer, pretzels, bratwurst, and sauerkraut!
And all over the Western hemisphere there will be celebrations and observances of All Saints Day and All Hallows’ Eve, also known as Halloween, Samhain and Dia de los Nuertos.
Lesser known, but no less celebrated holidays include Durga, Divali, and Ch’u Sok, all of which are celebrated according to the lunar calendar.
As the days get cooler, and the nights get longer, I feel the need to build a fire in the fireplace and curl up with some yarn and make something. My latest projects are some really cute amigurumi animals and a sweater that I am crocheting. And I’ve started cooking “Fall” food. Soups and stews are so comforting, and there is nothing better than Apple Brown Betty made with apples right off the tree.
I dyed some yarn with coffee recently, and I’m starting to make some costumes. I hope to start making a lot more.
Have a fabulous October, and a fun Fall. Go jump in some leaves!!!
Celebrating in October
Fall colors are so vivid. I love the bright yellow of my ginkgo tree. When the leaves fall, I want to be 10 again, and pile up leaves and play in them. The crinkling sound is so invigorating.
